Task 9- Terminology

• Mainstream = Ideas, attitudes, or activities that are shared by most people and regarded as normal or conventional.
• Independent = An independent film or indie film is a film production produced mostly or completely outside of the major film studio system, as well as being produced and distributed by independent company's.
• Distribution = Film distribution is the process of making a movie available for viewing by an audience.
• Marketing = The practice of promotion specifically in the film industry, and usually occurs in coordination with the process of film distribution.
• Exchange = how a film is viewed whether its in a cinema, at home or on a device via streaming.
• Multinational = A company or firm that has branches all over the world and offers a branch of services such as Walt Disney.
• Monopoly = Where one single company dominates all or nearly all of the market for a given product.
• Oligopoly = Where the market consists of a select few companies having significant influence over an industry- the big six.
• The big six = 20th Century Fox, Columbia Pictures, Warner Bros, Paramount Pictures, Walt Disney and Universal Studios.
• Horizontal integration = This is where a production company expands into other areas of one industry. This means that the company can develop in a particular area of production or they can buy out another company that deals with these areas. 
• Vertical integration = This is when the production company has the ownership of the means of production, distribution and exhibition of the film by the same company, because of this they receive all of the profit.
• Synergy = Is the simultaneous release of two or more products to promote each other.
• Merchandising = Branded products that help to promote a film or media event such as Iron Man helmets sold in children's toy shops.
• Ultra violet = Allows you to store digital versions of films bought on DVD or Blu-ray. This enables playback on different devices using multiple applications from several different streaming service
• Where mass media is used to promote a brand or film. These include conventional media as we know it, television and radio advertising, print as well as internet.    
• Below the line = An advertising strategy in which a product is promoted in mediums other than radio and television etc. 
• Technology convergence/cross media convergence = The combining of two or more mediums, like the film industry working together with the music industry (Adele releasing to promote the film)
• Consumption =  The sum of media information taken in by a group or individual.
• Exhibition = The last stage of a film's distribution journey, showing the film in theatres.
• Piracy = Obtaining, copying and distributing a media material without proper rights of legal ownership. 
• Tie In = A media product such as a book, video game or movie that makes use of material presented in another usually more well-known media product. For example: a video game that was a tie-in to a popular movie- Lego Batman game etc.

Merlin Task

Class can be represented through several things in the Merlin clip. 

In the scene were Merlin and the male protagonist are in the barn the camera angle is higher then Merlin. By the camera angle being higher then Merlin the producer is trying to show that because he is above him in class he should be above him in power. With Merlin being below him its showing that he cannot fight back and that he is weak and vulnerable. 

In the same scene as the previous paragraph we see that a conversation has developed between Merlin and the male protagonist. There is an over the shoulder shot that shows this. Its showing that the people in a lower class are always being watched over by people of a higher status. This matches the stereotype of people in a lower class as they are again seen as weak and vulnerable. 

Within the very first scene we see a female protagonist wearing a purple dress, this can suggest wealth and her higher position in class compared to Merlin, When she enters the room we can see that Merlin is touching all her items. She reacts in an angry manner to this and it suggests that she is matching the stereotype of being arrogant and out of touch with the real world. These all suggest that the audience to this show are not upper class because the lower to middle class people may be able to relate to this point. 

Merlin's costume is extremely worn. This shows the stereotype of lower class people being shabby and not very well groomed due to their financial situation. This may indicate that he cannot afford to buy some new clothes but on the other hand it could show that he is very grateful for what he has and will wear it till it isn't wearable no longer.   

The light is extremely present among the scene when the old protagonist male looks out at the window to Merlin. The light suggests wisdom, peace, and positiveness meaning that he brings a good view among the lower class. This goes against the stereotype of the lower class not having any power. The way he looks down and can put a stop to it shows his power. 

The setting is extremely important that the church/castle suggests that the female protagonist is upper class. This is due to money again. This goes with the stereotype due to how people see the upper class and how they are snobby with their money and showing it off. 

Hotel Babylon Analysis

Sound

Sound of struggle increased	In the final lobby scene	make the audience feel bad for the actor and the struggle.
‘I wasn’t always a cleaner’	In the closet scene	To counter the stereotype and to show that Africans aren’t stereotype of the uneducated and undeveloped Africans.
‘Just here to stop anyone from getting out’	In the first scene	makes the officer seem evil and they are stopping freedom
Many different languages and ethnicities.	Throughout the clip.	To show the different cultures to present although they interact with one another in fear but do not talk the same language.
Rattling of key in the door	When entering closet scene.	To show the panic of the people and also that she wants to protect.
Music is fast paced	When the white male walks in	The tension increase and shows his power.
Silence as the staff enter the cupboard	In the cupboard scene.	This is to show the lack of power and that they are alone in the cupboard with danger walking around, the men.

Camera

White male power	When entering the hotel.	This shows that they have the power as they have badges and they are wearing suits to show they have power in the hotel.
Women dressed in all white	At the counter of the hotel	It shows innocent for the immigrants she has.
Dark cupboard and all crammed in	In the cupboard scene	This shows that they have no power once they are in there because they are isolated whilst the males are walking around.
Locker had pictures	After the man is taken	This shows that he is now a memory and he has lost his freedom to make the audience feel the way the characters do.

  

Mise En Scene

Fast paced when rushing to get immigrants to safety	Once white male enters	all the people are in danger.
Quick zoom to oriental woman	When door is knocked	this is showing her protectiveness over them.
Shot reverse shot	Between who is in charge	This shows the equality between the white male and female because they have the same screen time and therefore they are as important as each other.
Depth of field shot	When the man was leaving	This shows the power difference between the oriental woman and the white male and therefore he has more power as the camera focuses on him.

Editing

Focus of ‘John’ the white male who walks in with a suit and a badge.	In the hotel lobby	His face is centralised in the shot and it is focused on his face whilst he is walking towards the female dressed all in white. The man has the power over everyone else. The serious face shows how he is the villain in this clip.
Focus on hand opening door	In the staff room	she doesn't know about the danger on the other side.
Tracking shot showing each ethnicity	In the canteen	This tracking shots shows that even though before they were all scared together in the staff room and all ethnicities were scared and with one another. As soon as all of that is over they all in their own ethnicities and each in own group showing that they were all together at one point then alone showing how fear brings them together.
Close up shots of the immigrants hiding	In the staff room cupboard	Shows fear and vulnerability but also in a small space and when women passes out and they all surround her and are scared.
Low mid shot angle in kitchen	In the kitchen with all of the illegal immigrants	The camera shakes and this shows that people are scared and shows that the tension between all of the immigrants.
